The Hague is one of the most well known cities of the Netherlands. It serves as the main seat of government but has a lot more to offer! As a local I hope to give you a helpful guide about what to do in The Hague this summer.

Shopping

Everyone who visits The Hague will notice the many shops the city centre holds. But did you know that there are many ‘hidden’ shopping streets? Summer break is definitely a good time to explore these smaller shopping streets. At the Fahrenheitstraat there is a great mix between popular shops and small boutiques such as Stijlbandiet. Another popular street to spend your free days is the Frederik Hendriklaan (also called ‘de Fred’). This street has some nice shops, restaurants and even a Joe & The Juice. If you like shopping, make sure to check out the Shopping Night event on the 28th of June! During shopping night most stores have great offers so that’s definitely a plus if you live on a student budget ;). Would you like to get more control on your cash flow? At the Rabobank you can get a free Studentenrekening with many benefits for students. Even if you’re an international student!

Music festivals

A music festival is a great way to spend your sunny days off. Since the Netherlands is well known for its music festivals, it should be no surprise that there are many different music festivals to visit. Parkpop is probably the most famous free music festival of The Hague. Many Dutch artists such as Ronnie Flex and Ilse de Lange will perform at the Zuiderpark on the 30th of June. Another great festival at the Zuiderpark is The Crave Festival on the 1st of June. The Crave is popular among youngsters because of their carefully curated electronic music program.

Activities in Scheveningen

A benefit of The Hague is that the city centre is near the beach of Scheveningen. A great way to spend your summer holiday is to visit this city by the sea. You could relax at the beach, eat at the harbour or take a ride on the Ferris wheel above the sea. Scheveningen also hosts some popular events this summer like the International Fireworks Festival in August. Another great experience is to visit ‘Sail op Schevingen’. Scheveningen serves as the finish of the Liberty Tall Ships Regatta that starts in Normandy, France. During this event you can visit the impressive ships and partake in fun and interesting activities. A last tip for this summer is to visit ‘Vlaggetjesdag’. We Dutchies definitely love our ‘haring’. During Vlaggetjesdag we celebrate the arrival of the ‘Hollandse Nieuwe haring’ in Scheveningen.
